7 Female Empowerment Anthems That Will Make You Feel Invincible

There is nothing like an I-am-woman-hear-me-roar song. You know the ones, those songs that make you feel that being a woman is the most amazing thing anyone can be– then again, we are pretty bad-ass.  These are 7 of my favorite female empowerment songs. Not only will these tunes make you feel proud of being a woman, but they will make you feel invincible.

1. “Control” — Janet Jackson

This is a story about control
My control
Control of what I say
Control of what I do
And this time I’m gonna do it my way (my way)
I hope you enjoy this as much as I do
Are we ready?
I am
‘Cause it’s all about control (control)
And I’ve got lots of it)

2.  “Just a Girl” — No Doubt

Take this pink ribbon off my eyes
I’m exposed and it’s no big surprise
Don’t you think I know exactly where I stand
This world is forcing me to hold your hand

‘Cause I’m just a girl, a little ‘ol me
Well don’t let me out of your sight
Oh I’m just a girl, all pretty and petite
So don’t let me have any rights

Oh…I’ve had it up to here!

3. “Girl On Fire” — Alicia Keys

Looks like a girl, but she’s a flame
So bright, she can burn your eyes
Better look the other way
You can try but you’ll never forget her name
She’s on top of the world
Hottest of the hottest girls say
Oh, we got our feet on the ground
And we’re burning it down
Oh, got our head in the clouds
And we’re not coming down

4. “Grown Woman” — Beyoncé

They love the way I walk
‘Cause I walk with a vengeance
And they listen to me when I talk
‘Cause I ain’t pretendin’
It took a while, now I understand
Just where I’m going
I know the world and I know who I am
It’s ’bout time I show it (ahh)

5. “Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves”  — Eurythmics feat. Aretha Franklin

Sisters are doin’ it for themselves

Standin’ on their own two feet an ringin’ on their own bells.
Sisters are doin’ it for themselves.

Now this is a song to celebrate
The conscious liberation of the female state.
Mothers
Daughters and their daughters
Too

6. “Q.U.E.E.N” — Janelle Monáe feat. Erykah Badu

I can’t believe all of the things they say about me
Walk in the room they throwing shade left to right
They be like, “Ooh, she’s serving face.”
And I just tell ’em, cut me up, and get down

They call us dirty ’cause we break all your rules down
And we just came to act a fool, is that all right (Girl, that’s alright)
They be like, “Ooh, let them eat cake.”
But we eat wings and throw them bones on the ground

7. “I’m Every Woman” — Whitney Houston

I can cast a spell
With secrets you can’t tell
Mix a special brew
Put fire inside of you
But anytime you feel
Danger or fear
Instantly I will appear, ’cause
I’m every woman, it’s all in me

Ani Difranco – “Not A Pretty Girl”

(Suggested by Priscilla, PrisBlossom.com)

I am not an angry girl
but it seems like I’ve got everyone fooled
every time I say something they find hard to hear
they chalk it up to my anger
and never to their own fear
and imagine you’re a girl
just trying to finally come clean
knowing full well they’d prefer you
were dirty and smiling

and I am sorry
I am not a maiden fair
and I am not a kitten stuck up a tree somewhere

Brittney Spears – “Stronger”

(Suggested by Sonya, SingleStrides.com)

Hush, just stop
There’s nothing you can do or say, baby
I’ve had enough
I’m not your property as from today, baby
You might think that I won’t make it on my own
But now I’m

Stronger, than yesterday
Now it’s nothing but my way
My loneliness ain’t killing me no more
I, I’m stronger
