There’s something about music that speaks to our inner beings. For me, it’s always been the best way for me to communicate my emotions in ways that sometimes my own words just can’t. A perfectly executed lyric cries, uplifts, shouts and empowers. There’s been days where my frustrations have been released through the words of a good song. This power, makes music not only important, but vital in our lives. Today, I’d like to share with you 7 Body Image Anthems– songs that will make you feel beautiful and phenomenal even when the outside world tries to make you feel otherwise.
1. “Video Girl” — India Aarie
I’m not the average girl from your video
And I ain’t built like a supermodel
But I learned to love myself unconditionally,
Because I am a queen
I not the average girl from your video
My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes
No matter what I’m wearing I will always be
2. “Beautiful” — Christina Aguilera
Every day is so wonderful
Then suddenly it’s hard to breathe.
Now and then I get insecure
From all the pain, I’m so ashamed.
I am beautiful no matter what they say.
Words can’t bring me down.
I am beautiful in every single way.
Yes, words can’t bring me down… Oh no.
So don’t you bring me down today.
3. “Who Says” — Selena Gomez
You made me insecure,
Told me I wasn’t good enough.
But who are you to judge
When you’re a diamond in the rough?
I’m sure you got some things
You’d like to change about yourself.
But when it comes to me
I wouldn’t want to be anybody else.
4. “Try” — Colbie Caillat
Get your shopping on, at the mall, max your credit cards
You don’t have to choose, buy it all, so they like you
Do they like you?
Wait a second,
Why, should you care, what they think of you
When you’re all alone, by yourself, do you like you?
Do you like you?
You don’t have to try so hard
You don’t have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don’t have to change a single thing
5. “Lovin’ Me” — R&B Divas (featuring Faith Evans, Nicci Gilbert, Monifah, Syleena Johnson and Keke Wyatt)
I found me a place, where I ain’t doin’ nothin’, but lovin’ myself, and everything about me, yeah…
I found me a place, and it don’t even matter, what nobody else thinks, ’cause I’m lovin’ me, (yeah)
[Bridge:] If I’m not a size 2, it don’t fit you, it’s okay,
[Syleena:] I refuse to be dismissed because my skin is darker than yours,
[Nicci:] all that power when say “You’re pretty in the face”, if only I could lose some weight,
[Monifah:] anything you can do, I can do better,
[Keke:] made up my mind, won’t stop never…
6. “Body Love (Part 1 & 2)” — Mary Lambert
I Know girls who are trying to fit into the social norm
Like squeezing into last year’s prom dress
I know girls who are low rise, mac eyeshadow, and binge drinking
I know girls that wonder if they’re disaster and sexy enough to fit in
I know girls who are fleeing bombs from the mosques of their skin
Playing russian roulette with death; it’s never easy to accept
That our bodies are fallible and flawed
But when do we draw the line?
When the knife hits the skin?
7. “Unpretty” — TLC
Never insecure until I met you
Now I’m bein’ stupid
I used to be so cute to me
Just a little bit skinny
Why do I look to all these things
To keep you happy
Maybe get rid of you and then I’ll get back to me (hey)

Beyoncé – “Pretty Hurts”
(Suggested by Sharnda, FeedNClotheMe.com)
Shine the light on whatever’s worse
Perfection is the disease of a nation
Shine the light on whatever’s worse
Tryna fix something
But you can’t fix what you can’t see
It’s the soul that needs the surgery
