Gratitude. Every holiday season, we tend to focus on a spirit of gratitude and thankfulness. I think that’s one of the reasons this is my favorite time of year. People are so full of joy that they radiate positive energy everywhere they go. But what happens when the holidays are over? Do you still prioritize gratitude from January through September? I know it can be hard, especially when life happens, but I think that this mentality of gratitude is exactly what we need to get us through the storms in life.

These past two years have been some of the hardest for me, and like anyone else, there are days I don’t even want to get out of bed, let alone leave my house. But as hard as, those days can be I still have to go to work. I still have to face life. These are the days I shift my focus on gratitude. On being thankful for every other positive thing in my life– my family, friends, a roof over my head, health, a car that gets me around, my job, this blog. Reminding myself to be thankful for the good things in my life, the things that fill me with happiness, helps me get through the hard days. And yes, the good things aren’t always perfect, but they are the gifts/blessings that add to our lives.

Having something to nourish your soul and improve your life is definitely a reason to be grateful.

4 Ways to Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude:

1. Keep a Gratitude Journal.

Once a day, write down one thing that you’re thankful for. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or complicated, just one simple thing– like “Sunshine”.

2. Create a Visual Reminder.

Write down or print a quote that inspires you. Place it on a mirror, computer screen, or desk– somewhere you will see it everyday.

3. Practice Meditation.

Take at least 5 minutes at the start of your day to sit somewhere quiet and meditate. Focus on your breathing and clear your mind for the start of a new day. Don’t stress about doing it perfectly because there’s no right way to meditate, instead find the way that best works for you.

4. Give.

Giving doesn’t always involve money. If you are unable to give financially, give of yourself– your time and talents. Volunteer for charities and organizations you believe in.
