Inside Out

I came across Anastasia Amour’s writing on social media, Facebook to be precise, and my lovelies, it was love at first sight. I was amazed at how I hadn’t come across her work before that day. Well, to rectify all the time lost (and like a proper social media stalker) I proceeded to follow her on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter. I wanted as much of her positivity on as many of my timelines as I could get.

Now just in case you are not familiar with the magical unicorn that is Anastasia Amour, let me share a brief intro in her own words:

“I’m an eating disorder survivor and body image educator. I’m a rule breaker, action-taker, and a straight-talker. And I want to help every woman on the planet to stop hating their body.”

A few months ago she sent out a request for anyone interested in being part of a book review group. Well I jumped at the chance– books & writing have always been an absolutely heavenly combination for me. Later that week I received an email from Anastasia letting me know I would be part of the group and I was ecstatic to find out that the book we would be reading and reviewing would be her debut title– Inside Out.

Inside Out is a 14 day body image workbook. Each chapter is broken down for you to read on a daily basis and at the end of each chapter there’s an exercise to help you put into action what you’ve learned. Now, like anything else you don’t have to do the exercises if you are not feeling it, but I found they were a great way to emphasize and put into action each body positive message.

In order to start on a new leaf I opted to start reading my copy of the book in September, the month of my birthday. I figured what better way to embrace turning 40 than with positivity. I found it empowering to celebrate such a milestone in my life while renewing the strength of love I have for my body. This body that has taken me through 4 decades, that has stood with me even after I put it on a roller coaster of love and hate.

We celebrate all of the important relationships in our lives, after all isn’t that what anniversaries and birthdays are all about. Then why shouldn’t the relationship with our bodies be celebrated as well. If you think about it, it’s the longest relationship you will ever have. And no matter where you are in the path of self love, be it the beginning, middle or end learning to appreciate your body in a new light can only strengthen your bond. This book will do just that for you, it will help you see yourself with new loving eyes.

Anastasia’s no-bull body image advice style shines through on every page. In order to tackle something as complicated and emotional as your views on your body you need exactly that, honest no-bull advice. I love that she decided to make it a workbook because it allows you to easily read through it. Being able to put into practice the advice and affirmations she provides for you in each chapter is crucial to changing the way you see and talk to your body. I also opted to journal along with it. I wrote about how certain things made me feel and highlighted messages that stood out for me in the text. One of my favorite parts of the book were the quotes at the end of each chapter– I printed all of them and tacked them on my home office board for daily inspiration.

So join the revolution of self-love and give “your body the love it deserves”, because if there is anyone in this world worth investing in is yourself.
