7 Life Lessons from Empire

Unless you’ve been living under a huge rock you haven’t heard of FOX’s megahit Empire. What is this Empire you talk about, you ask? Well, it’s a musical drama starring Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Trai Byers, Jussie Smollett and newcomer Bryshere Gray. It centers around Lucious Lyon’s (Terrence) hip-hop & entertainment company, “Empire Enterprises” as well as the drama among the members of the family as they fight for control of the company.  — like the show’s byline says “Music Family Power”.

To say that Empire is addictive is an understatement. One episode is all it takes for you to fall in love with the music, which by the way is curated by Timbaland, the storyline and Cookie! Oh Cookie (Taraji), I don’t think I’ve loved a character so much in a while. Taraji is an absolute phenom in this role. I think that the amazing thing about this, or any successful show, is when the writers and actors develop complex characters you actually care about– like Cookie, Jamal, Lucious, Hakeem and even poor tormented Andre.

So today to alleviate some of the withdrawal and anxiety symptoms we are having since Season 1’s explosive finale, here are 7 Life Lessons from Empire.*

*warning: this post includes some spoilers from Season 1, so if you haven’t finished  watching proceed at your own risk

1. Respect Your Momma.

We don’t always see eye to eye with our moms, but most of the mother or mother figures in our lives have sacrificed their own well-beings and lives to improve our own. So although, we might disagree from time to time remember to give your moms the love and respect they’ve earned– especially, if that mom is Cookie Lyon.

2.  Reminiscing on good times is good for the soul.

Whether it’s reminiscing on good music, just plain ole good memories or both– like when Cookie got her groove back after reminiscing on Puma (Cuba Gooding Jr.) & the song he wrote for her. Good memories create euphoric feelings, which trigger happiness and boosts your mood. So reminisce away.

3. Sometimes you have to forget what everyone will think and just be true to yourself.

Have you ever heard “You can’t please all of the people all of the time?” Well my lovelies, there is truth in that. If you wait to live your life in hopes of pleasing everyone around you then guess what, you’ll never be happy. So don’t be afraid to be bold and claim your truth. Yes, some loved ones will be happy for you while others may not, but in the end what matters is that you find happiness in your life and with yourself.

 4. Be careful how far you push people.

Here’s a very important lesson learned, no matter how much anyone loves you or supports you everyone, let me say it again — EVERYONE, has a breaking point. And the thing is most times there is no coming back from that place. So don’t take people in your life for granted, yeah it might not create a label war or a security breach at your multi million dollar company, but feelings could get hurt and relationships can become irreparable.

 5. Perseverance pays off.

There will be people out there that will tell you that you don’t deserve it, you don’t have the skills or intelligence to obtain it. But here is where believing in yourself comes in. Don’t let the naysayers determine which dreams you will follow and how far you will go in life. So believe in yourself, keep on pushing and you might just end up with the empire.

6. Even the strongest of us needs help sometimes.

Regardless of what life throws our way most of us feel that we can handle it all on our own and until something “breaks” us we spiral down. The thing is we all need help, at one time or another we all need someone to be there by our side. And I know you might think or feel it makes you weak, but it doesn’t– it can actually make you stronger.

7. No bad deed goes unpunished.

Look, I’m a firm believer that the things you do come back to haunt you. For example, Did you put your middle child in the garbage because he dressed up in heels & scarf? Did you let your wife take the fall and serve prison time for you? Did you forget about said wife while she was in prison? Did you sleep with your middle child’s girlfriend and get her pregnant? Did you allow said son to believe the baby was his? Did you kill a friend that has rolled with you since back in the day? Did you cheat on your fiancée with your ex-wife? Did you lie to your ex-wife about leaving said fiancée? Did you lie to your fiancée about no longer sleeping with said wife?  If you’ve said yes to any of these or are Lucious Lyon and have said yes to ALL of these, then, my dear, you deserve whatever is coming your way.  There’s only so much negativity you can put into the world before it boomerangs back and bites you in the ass– and believe me, it won’t care that you are at your celebration concert. When it’s your time, it’s your time.

And there you have them my lovelies, 7 Life Lessons from Empire. Oh, and FOX thank you for not playing with us and bringing back Empire so quickly. Now can you do something about speeding up time and making September 23rd get here faster? Thanks!
