Now that I (like most of you, I imagine) have completed my binge watching of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black (OITNB), I can focus enough on life to write this post. Besides the obvious phenomenal writing and storylines, I think it’s the amazing women of OITNB that keep us coming for more. And this season we got to know the ladies of Litchfield a little bit better.
We all have our favorite inmate, be it Taystee, Pennsatucky, Poussey (accent à droite, bitch), Red , or Flaca and Maritza, we can all agree that these ladies know how to keep it real.
So today I would like to share with you 7 Life Lessons from the fabulous ladies of OITNB*
*warning: this post includes some spoilers from Season 2, so if you haven’t finished watching proceed at your own risk
1. Redefine the rules of beauty and womanhood.
There is no such thing as the “right” way to be a woman, we have to realize that only we can define ourselves – not our family, significant other or the media. We have to be true to ourselves and embrace the fact that we are all beautiful in our own unique and spectacular way.
2. Ignore the do’s and dont’s…rock those plushious curves!
We’ve all heard them – do wear black, don’t wear stripes. You know what I hear? Blah! Blah! Blah!
What you should do is follow the lead of our girl Black Cindy — DO love your body, DO rock your curves, and DON’T give a damn about what others think you should wear on YOUR body!
3. Never underestimate yourself.
Not everyone will think you have what it takes to make it, but it’s not up to them to determine how high your star will rise and how bright you should sparkle. So say “bye!” to the haters, let go of your self-doubts and go chase your dreams.
4. Friendships are important.
Every wonder woman needs a soul mate — I’m talking a best friend. Someone to share your thoughts, dreams (sometimes gossip), and act a fool with.
– “Got it Mackenzie?”
– “Oh yes! Amanda!”
5. Be YOUrself.
We’re constantly surrounded by these “perfect” images and sometimes our not-so-perfect lives seem a little bland. Daydreaming about being someone else is fun sometimes, but don’t ever get it twisted — you are fabulous just as you are.
6. When you fail in love…try, try, again.
We’ve all seen them, heard about them — heck sometimes we even get confused for them — the woman with the perfect relationship. Oh darlings! there is no such thing in this world. Two human beings a perfect relationship do not make.
But as tricky as love can be, it is definitely worth it. So when you fall take a tip from our girl Morello. Cry your eyes out and keep going because someone out there will love you just as you are.
Oh, and definitely try to avoid getting caught in your “ex’s” bathtub while wearing their fiancée’s veil– I can’t imagine that will go over well at all.
The final and most important lesson learned from the ladies is…
7. BE POLITE or at least well mannered.
No matter how strong willed, deviously intelligent or incredibly popular you are just don’t be RUDE. Because like a boomerang it always comes back to bite you in the ass, and sometimes even run you over with the prison van as you’re making your big escape.
Until next season — which can’t come soon enough,
